Any property unprotected by a damp barrier is susceptible to rising damp.
Rising damp only begins to show once moisture has already started to climb up the internal or external walls. The extent of the problem may be unknown, it could have taken many months or even years to manifest in areas that are unseen before it reaches a visible surface.
During the construction of a property, a rising damp barrier should have been installed into the brickwork to prevent water from being absorbed into the brickwork/timber structure and prevent rising damp. Over time the damp barrier may become eroded or damaged leading to the damp proof barrier failing, once the barrier is no long substantial enough to prevent the damp, rising damp can infect the property.
